Alpha Omega Town Planning recommends the use of environmentally sustainable design principles wherever possible. For excellent information about the various options, see the following Australian Government resources:
For existing dwellings, it is clearly not possible to incorporate sustainable and energy-saving design principles into the main structure of the building. However, it is possible to retrofit insulation that can greatly increase living comfort while at the same time decreasing living costs. The following treatments can be provided for most homes:
Upgrade the ceiling insulation. Some older homes will have no insulation, or insulation that has lost its insulative qualities. This can be replaced or topped up with bulk insulation material such as cellulose fibre or Earthwool batts. This can reduce total energy costs for heating and cooling by around 35%.
Install under-floor insulation - up to 20% of energy costs can be saved.
Insulation of walls - this needs a special product that is pumped in loose. It can be readily done for most existing dwellings and can save a further 20%.
